Biographical Sketch:
Of English & Welsh descent. Son of Daniel & Calista (Ellsworth) Ellis. He left home at the age of 12 and went East and worked for the Canal Co. in New York for 3 years in various jobs. He returned home in 1856. He worked on his uncle Thomas' farm until 1862 while studying evenings and winters. In 1862 he wnlisted in Co. B, 5th Michigan Cavalry, as a sergeant, acheiving the rank of captain. He opened a livery stable in Ypsilanti after the war. He served as deputy sheriff in Washtenaw County. After a few years he went back to farming, first in Lenewee County and then in 1870, in Huron twp., Wayne County. He also manufactured lumber and charcoal. He held the office of township supervisor.
