Son of Robert & Letty A. (Young) French. He moved to the US in 1867. Telegrapher & manager for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. Manufactured barrels in Elmore, OH with his father. Moved to Dundee, MI, 1876. He engaged in saw-milling and was an agent for the Canada Southern system (RR). Held no offices before entering the legislature. Michigan land commissioner, 1894-1900. Died at St. Mary's Hospital, Saginaw of cancer. Member of the Masons.
