Biographical Sketch:
Born west of Madison, IN; the family moved to Coles Co., IL when he was 14. Enlisted in Co. H, 10th Illinois Cavalry, 9/23/1861 as a private, fighting in Missouri, Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana and Texas. Discharged as a captain 1/6/1866. Moved to Berrien Co. in 1866, & bought 80 acres unimproved land near Chikaming. In 1868, he went to Salt Lake City to work for the Union Pacific Railroad Co. for a year before returning to farm in Berrien Co. He served as supervisor for 15 terms, and in all other township positions, save treasurer. He was also under sheriff and captain of the Anti-Horse Thief Association [for about 10 years]. He was a member of the Masons and the GAR.
