Biographical Sketch:
Of English and Scottish descent. Son of John A. & Sarah (Monroe) Hayes. The sr. Hayes followed the frontier & moved to Brighton, Livingston Co., MI in 1841. At 18 hired out as a drover headed toward NY; attended school 3 winters in Liberty; returned to Michigan, 1852; taught 3 yrs before returning to farming. In 1855 he bought land in Gilford Twp., Tuscola Co. Owned a series of farms before settling in Juanita twp, MI in 1865. Held several local positions, including supervisor of Gilford [3 years] and Juanita [11 years]; undersheriff [4 years]; and school director [14+ years]; school inspector. He was secretary of the Tuscola County Agricultural Society for 7 years. He was living in Riverside, CA in 1900.
