Biographical Sketch:
Son of Caleb W. & Elizabeth (Ricker) Phinney. His family moved to New York City when he was 3; 3 years later they moved to Erie Co., PA; in 1855 they moved to Richmond, Ashtabula Co., OH. Moved to Milletts, Ingham Co., MI 1871; he worked as a mechanic until August 1874 when he began manufacturing boat oars in Carson CIty, MI. In 1876, he moved to East Saginaw, again manufacturing boat oars through the firm LaDue & Phinney until January 1882 when Phinney continued in business alone. They also made salt, shingles and lumber. Moved several times engaging in the same business & expanding products made.
