Son of Robert and Mary E. VanDusen. Moved to Ovid, NY at age 6; clerked in a store from age 14-21 in Sheldrake, NY; then went into business for himself in Ovid, NY. Held a few offices in, NY, including superintendent of the poor for Seneca Co. He was 'first door keeper' for the New York senate, 1863-64; deputy provost mrshall, 1861-64; and deputy of internal revenue. Moved to Owosso, MI, 1869. He served 2 terms as justice of the peace and was deputy sheriff. He was engaged in a lumber business, Van Dusen, Smith & Johnson, in Saginaw Co..
