Son of Thomas TinhamEmigrated, around 1828, at age 10, working for ret. Lt. General Murray, a hunter lived in Monroe before moving to Detroit soon after. Read law briefly in youth eventually learning bricklaying after attempts at farming & driving teams in Detroit. He also farmed in Livonia and Pontiac. In 1838 became foreman for Abiel Wood, making brick in Ann Arbor for the 1st University bldg. Moved to Livonia & began farming in 1853.
