Son of David & Cynthia (Moody) Vinton. At 10 he was placed at a farm where he worked until 14. Apprenticed to a tanner at 14, in Newark, Licking Co., OH until fall of 1849; he moved to Steuben Co., IN in 1852; worked as a journeyman until 1854. Came to Michigan briefly in the 1860's as parnter in a Lansing grocery business, then as a tanner. Returned to IN until 1870 when he relocated to Williamsburg, Grand Traverse Co., MI to open a general store. Held several local positions, including post master
