Biographical Sketch:
Of Scotch-Irish ancestry. Son of Hamilton Mercer and Virginia (Huckins) Wright. When the Civil War broke out, his mother took the children of the family to Geneva, Switzerland, where Hamilton remained until age 17. He then went to Cheltenham, England for a preparatory course for college. Moved to Bay City in 1877 and was admitted to the bar, 1878. Elected alderman, 1881; mayor of Bay City, 1887-89, 1895-97; probate judge 1889-1900. Member of the Masons, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and Elks.

Notable Facts:
Graduated first in his class in Yale Law, receiving the Jewel award for excellence in scholarship.
