Biographical Sketch:
Son of Abner Curtis and Laura Wellman (Baker) Bates. His family moved to Cleveland and Lena, OH for a time before going to Michigan in 1858. He taught for nearly 10 years. He elisted in Co. C 21st Michigan Infantry 2/5/1864; transfered: 6/9/1865; discharged: 7/18/1865. He engaged in merchandizing for 8 years in Moline, MI after building a cheese factory there, making cheese for almost 15 years. Eventually operated the Maple Ridge Stock Farm of Dorr township. He served as township superintendent of schools, 1875, and supervisor and as first financial clerk of the state. Served as a trustee of the Michigan Asylum, [1889] under Governors Luce, Rich and Bliss. He was president of the Dairy Commission.
