Biographical Sketch:
Son of William C. and Emma T. (Spalding) Sterling. He served as director of the National Council on Alcoholism; executive secretary, finance chair and chairman of Monroe County Democratic Committee [1932-36]. In April 1933, he was appointed deputy state fire marshal for theater inspections. he also served in the state highway department. He was reading clerk to the state House of Representatives in 1937. He was in the 125th Infantry, 32d 'Red Arrow' Division in WWI and the 60th Bn., Seabees in WWII. He achieved the rank of Captain. He studied alcohol from 1947-50 at Yale and Texas Christian University. He lived in Fremont, OH for a time after his second marriage before returning to Monroe, MI in December 1849, working for the National Committee on Alcoholism, lecturing in Ohio and Michigan. The Mayor Cobo appointed him director of Detroit's Skid Row Program of Rehabilitation 1951-55. In fall 1920, he worked for the experimental engineering department of Carnegie Steel; returned to school in fall 1921; 1922 worked for National Tube Division of US Steel in Ohio then Pennsylvania. 1924 found him at the Pittsburgh Branch of Ford Motor Co. as a car distributor but he returned to Monroe in 1925, working for Consolidated Paper Co. In 1927 he was in the lumber business in Monroe. In 1955 he became the business representative of Michigan Engineers Inc.Member of the American Legion, United Mexican Border Veterans, Michigan Botanical Club, Old Detroit Light Guard, Assoc. for Advancement and Instruction in Alcohol and Narcotics, the Red Cross and the Monroe County Historical Society.
