Born the son of poor farmers. He was elected Branch County superintendent of schools at 21; he resigned before the end of his term to become a life insurance solicitor; elected to the board of school examiners twice and secretary of the board 3 times. He served as circuit court commissioner 2 terms. Admitted to the bar in 1877. Senior member of Campbell & Johnson. He was the private secretary to the governor of Michigan for a time. He served as state insurance commissioner. Appointed to the Federal Reserve Board in 1923; died from a cerebral hemorrhage while playing golf a week after being swore in. member of the Knights Templar
