Son of James A. and Mary Ann (Lebar) Dakin; orphaned at 13. Enlisted in Co. C, 9th Regiment, Michigan Cavalry at 15, serving 18 months in the military. Moved to Ionia Co. at war's end; worked on farms & in sawmills; inspected & packed shingles.

Notable Facts:
Accused of involvement in a bribery in 1887; expelled from the Legislature 4/28/1887. In 1910 and 1920, he was an 'inmate' at the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Milwaukee, WI. He was admitted in Oct. 1908; discharged in 1915 but readmitted in 1916.
