Of Scottish descent. Second child of William and Mercy (Aldrich) Dunbar. Ill health forced him to leave school. He went to work with the team re-surveying Northern Michigan for several years. He served as school inspector [14 years], county surveyor [at age 22], justice of the peace, probate judge [elected in 1888], county superintendent of the poor, draim commissioner and town clerk [12 years]. Retired as probate judge at 66 after 12 years in office. member of the Masons
