Biographical Sketch:
Son of Henry and Ester (Robertson) Hammond. His family moved to Michigan in 1833. At 19, he began teaching and contiued for 20 years. He became a bookkeeper in a store for a time. He abandoned this field due to ill health and became a farmer. He purchased a farm in East China, MI in 1871. He served as township clerk for 18 years. He was also township superintendent of schools, justice of the peace and a school director [23 years].
