Son of William and Ella (Richardson) Townsend. He was enployed by Buick Motor Car Co. as a bridge crane operator. In 1940 he was a wire puller in an auto plant. Member of the Flint Youth Bureau; the Masons; Elks; secretary of the Detroit Consistory No. 1; member and former recording secretary of Buick Local No. 599, UAW-CIO.
