Biographical Sketch:
Son of a farmer, ??? and ???(Mansfield Green. Went out on his own at 16 as a farm laborer and studied when he could. At 19 he qualified as a teacher. He taught for 2 winters. He began studying law in 1828. 5 years later he was admitted to the bar in NY and began practicing in Brownville, NY. In 1835 he moved to Rochester, MI, practicing with H.L. Stevens. he bought land which is now Owosso, MI, 1837. He served as justice of the peace, supervisor, school district assessor and prosecuting attorney of Shiawassee County there. He moved to Pontiac in 1843. In 1844 he was asked to revise the statutes of Michigan by 1846. he was appointed Justice of Michigan state supreme court, 1848-57; chief justice of Michigan state supreme court, 1854-55; circuit judge in Michigan 6th Circuit, 1858-66. He moved to Bay City in 1867 to practice law. From 1872-87 he was judge in the 18th circuit.
In 1860 he published a book on circuit court practce; in 1877 a treatise on common law courts in Michigan; and in 1879 a work on townships and their officials.
