Biographical Sketch:
Eldest son of John & Susan (Mitchell) Avery. Came to MI, 1836. Practiced medicine in Owosso then in Ionia, MI (1849-54); moved to Otsego, MI, until 1862. Surgeon to the 21st Reg. Mich. Inf. in the Civil War. Served in the Army of the Cumberland in KY & TN; with Sherman on his march to the sea; settled in Greenville, MI, 1867 or 68. In 1872 built a drugstore; assumed operation of the store, 1875.Member of the State bd of health, 1880, reapp., 1886. He was a member of the Masons.

Notable Facts:
Advocated the admittance of women to the State University; U.S. Rep. from Mich. 11th Dist., 1893-97. Considered a skilled surgeon. MI Biog gives birth date as 2/20/1824.
