Biographical Sketch:
Son of Robert and Catherine (Myers) Shoemaker. Moved with his family to Joliet, IL, 1837; moved to Sandusky, OH for a year working with his brother on a rail line. 1842, worked in Republic, OH buying grain; 1852, manufactured iron operating a rolling mill in Covington, KY. 1855 became a Michigan farmer in Jackson until relocating to Fair Plains, MI, 1861, to engage in farming & lumbering. Estab. Amsden, 1867; built a sawmill there, 1872, which was destroyed by fire, 1877. Postmaster of Jackson, MI 1859-61; elected justice of the peace, 1866; superintendent of the poor in 1904
