High school principal. Held many local public offices in New Bedford, MA. Helped establish the 1st free public library in Massachusetts. Colonel in the MA state militia. Pres. of an insurance co. Moved to Michigan, 1856; lived in Flint; engaged in the lumber business.

Compiled & publ. the first 5 directories of New Bedford, MA. Instrumental in the construction of the Flint & Holly Railroad. Mayor of Flint; Governor of Michigan 1865-1/1869.
