Cyc & Chapman (Le) give birth date as 5/24/1804. Eldest son of Jesse & Phoebe (Howland) Crapo. Father was of French descent. Self taught surveyor; made his own 1st compass. Self educated. High school principal. Held many local public offices in New Bedford, MA. Helped establish the 1st free public library in Massachusetts. Colonel in the MA state militia. Pres. of an insurance co. Moved to Michigan, 1856; lived in Flint; engaged in the lumber business.
