He came to Michigan in 1836 and settled at Grand Rapids, then called Kent. He went to Detroit in 1845, and formed the commission house of Bridge & Lewis, with partner Alexander Lewis. He was the first president of the Detroit Board of Trade, in 1856, and held that position 3 years, and on his retirement was elected a life member of the board. He was collector for several years in Detroit and was nominated for the office of mayor by both the Democratic and Republican parties.
