Biographical Sketch:
Son of Samuel and Parthenia (Raymond) Ashman. Began working for the American Fur Co. in Montreal in April of 1818. Sent to L;Anse, MI initially then to Fond du Lac, WI in 1824.He was Sheriff of Chippewa County in 1834 and took the census of the county that year. He was Justice of the Peace and he was one of Sault Ste. Marie’s first judges. He held many other important offices during his life time. He was a postmaster at the time of his death.
Notable Facts:
Ashmun St. in the Sault was named for his family (though spelled differently).
Father-in-law was the Ojibwe Chief at Sandy Lake, WI.
His remains were relocated to Maple Ridge Cemetery when the City Blg was constructed at Ashmun and Arlington streets..
