Educated in Escanaba, Michigan public schools.
Biographical Sketch:
After leaving high school he took up the study of telegraphy. He worked for the Postal Telegraph Company as manager of their Escanaba office and was later transferred to the Chicago offices and remained with this company for about one year. In 1909 he started working for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad at Escanaba as a roundhouse laborer and in 1910 became a locomotive fireman on the same road. He passed the engineers' examination in 1916, and was a locomotive engineer, working out of Escanaba and being continuously in the employment of this company since 1909. Served as a member of the board of supervisors.

Republican and was elected to the legislature in 1926 and re-elected November 6, 1928, without opposition.
