Biographical Sketch:
Son of Phillip Ryly and Nancy (DeGraaf) Toll. He left college to help his family, arriving in Centreville, MI, 1834; moved to Fawn River, MI, 1838. Engaged mercantile & manufacturing activities. Achieved the rank of Major General in the state militia before entering the regular army as a captain during the war with Mexico with Co. E, 15th US Infantry, 3/1847. Appointed examiner of patents for 7 yrs. Member of the Interior Guard & the National Rifles. Moved to Petoskey, 1880; elected pres. of the village 1881/82. Cultivated plum trees.
