Son of Bela Houk. Moved to Kent Co., MI in 1850. Enlisted as a private in Co. A, 3rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry in spring 1861; reenlisted in 1863; promoted to corporal. He was wounded at Coal HArbor, VA in June 1864; honorably discharged in August 1865. he returned to Kent Co. after the war but moved to Oceana Co., in spring 1873. He served as supervisor of Elbridge twp, [7 years], justice of the peace and school inspector. Member of the GAR
