Of English ancestry. Son of George and Augusta D. (Johnson) Barnes. He was business manager for the Flint Daily Press when it began publication in 1912. He was appointed Postmaster by President Taft on January 1, 1910, a position he resigned after he sold the Bellevue Gazette and moved to Flint.
