She was a public schools social worker for 33 years. She was the Eaton County Commissioner for 2 terms, and a family counseling center therapist for St. Vincent Catholic Charities. She was the Michigan State University field liaison for the social work program. She had a fellowship from Michigan State University for the Michigan Political Leadership Program. She was a part of Michigan Safe Schools/Safe Communities, Office of Public health Preparedness Initiative with Homeland Security, and the Service Academy Review Board. She was the vice president and a board member with the Y.E.S. House. She was a member of the Grand Ledge Alliance for a Quality Community, Community Initiative for a Drug Free environment. She was on the Steering Committee for Federally Funded Title V Grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. She was a facilitator for Make a Difference Community Recognition Dinner, and was part of the Caring Neighbor Advisory Board. She spearheaded an employee coat drive at Grand Ledge City Hall for the clothing bank. She was a volunteer for Grand Ledge Reuse, Dejunk and Recycle Day, and Thanksgiving Day Community Dinner. She was a team coach for Odyssey of the Mind. Abed served two terms on the Eaton County Commission from 2007 to 2010
