Son of Peleg Ransom. Admitted to the Bar in Buffalo, NY in 1853. He moved to DeWitt, MI in May of that year and practiced until 1857 when he moved to St. Johns, remaining there until 1861. Grand Rapids, MI was his next stop Served as city attorney for several terms.
