Biographical Sketch:
Grandson of US Rep. Charles Rich, of Vermont; nephew of Charles Rich, Jr.(MI Board of Agriculture); son of John W. Rich and Jerusha (Wright or Treadway) Rich. Moved with his parents to Addison Co., VT, 1846 & to Elba, Lapeer Co., MI, 1848; engaged in agricultural pursuits. State railroad commissioner 1887-1891; US collector of customs at Detroit 2/16/1898-1/30/1906; elected State treasurer of Michigan to fill a vacancy 1/23/1908-1/1/1909; collector of customs at Port Huron, MI 12/11/1908-5/30/1913.

Served in both chambers. State House speaker during the last 2 terms, 1877-80. Resigned from the MI Senate, 1881 to run for Congress. Elected to the 47th Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Omar D. Conger, served from 4/5/18813/3/1883; Governor of Michigan 1892-1896;
