Biographical Sketch:
Son of Cornelius and Harriett (Phelps) Van Aken. He moved to the Adrian, MI area in 1835 but moved to Girard, Branch Co. in 1838. He served as Girard Township supervisor for 14 years. He spent 2.5 years in the California gold fields [1851-54]. Upon his return, he bought the family farm and tended it until 1891, when he moved to Coldwater. He rented out his farm but began buying and selling wool and stock. He helped organize the Farmer's Mutual Insurance Co. of Branch County and served as a director and president of the company for 25 years. Member of the Grange
