Biographical Sketch:
Son of Milton C. Watkins. Emigrated to Michigan in 1834 and settled in Grattan, Kent Co. but later moved to Rockford. Admitted to the bar in 1861. Enlisted in the cavalry in 1861; commissioned as a Lieutenant in the NY 1st cavalry; later made captain. Appointed Assistant Adjutant General of the dept. of West Virginia; served on the staff of Gen W.H Seward until the close of the war. Hhe held several local offices and was warden of the House of Corrections in Ionia. He was also Indian Agent in the west for some years.
