Biographical Sketch:
Of Welsh descent. Son of Ephraim and Lucy (Babcock) Caukin. Came to Grattan, MI in 1844. Moved to Oakfield in 1848, to Sparta in 1867 then Antrim Co. in 1883. He served as supervisor, highway commissioner, justice of the peace and all local township offices; county surveyor for one term and was Deputy US Surveyor. Member of the Good Templar

Notable Facts:
Instrumental in organizing the schools in northern Kent Co. Died at age 68. Politically a Democrat until 1848; a Free Soile until 1854; a Whig then a Republican.
