Son of Alvin & Wealthy (Austin) Burt. Of English descent. After serving in the War of 1812 he moved to Auburn, MI & built a sawmill. He worked as a millwright & a surveyor. Early advocate of building a canal at the Sault. 1833, US deputy surveyor for the territory northwest of Ohio. 1833, appointed assoc. justice to the Macomb Circuit Ct.

Notable Facts:
Member of the Masons. Served on Territorial Council, 1826-27. 1 of the founders of the Baptist church in Mt. Vernon. 1829 patented the the first typewriter. Invented the solar compass, patented 2/25/1836, perfected by 1850. Located the f1st iron ore deposits in the western UP. Committees: Internal Improvements (chair)
