Son of Loren M and Mary (Locke) Oviatt. Moved to Michigan in May of 1860. Enlisted at 15 as a private in Company G, 21st Michigan Infantry Volunteers 9/8/1864; discharged 7/18/1865 and settled in Chase Township, Lake Co. One of the pioneers of Lake Co., MI. He served as sheriff, 2 terms, and was president of Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Co. of Lake , Osceola and Wexford counties

Temperance advocate Death date may be 4/12/1888; found a eulogy in Crossman dated 4/18/1888 that refers to "the 12th inst."
