Biographical Sketch:
Son of Sarah (Lockwood) Peabody. He moved to Conneautville, PA , at age 10; commenced teaching school at age 15 years; clerking in store summers until the Civil War. Enlisted as a pri- vate [9/18/1861] after the first battle of Bull Run,; made 1st Lieutenant, and commanded Battery M, 1st NY Artillery, in Gen. Bank's famous retreat in Shenandoah Valley. Was severely injured at the battle of Winchester and resigned due to physical disability from active service and went into the Quartermaster's Department in Washington. [Mustered out 6/25/1862Came to Michigan in 1864 and farmed in Bloomfield or engaged in wood and coal business at Detroit, and supplying the chain of Forts along the lakes with forage and fuel. He was proud of the title of " Progressive farmer " and successful "Stock breeder."
