Practiced medicine in Defiance, OH for 7 yrs before moving to Traverse City, MI, 1862. Served as Supervisor & Pres. of Traverse City. Affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal church but was not an active member. Politically he was a Whig and Free-soiler before joining the Republican party.. Retired in Traverse City & lived with his son Dr. Edwin Ashton. Member of the Odd Fellows.
