Biographical Sketch:
At the age of 13, he went with his parents, Leonard and Anna (Whitford) Sherman, to Wisconsin where he earned his own living working on a farm. He e left college to join the army, enlisting in Company C, 11th Mich. Vol. Infantry. He served in 15 hard fought battles, besides the siege of Atlanta and the raid in Alabama after Morgan's guerrillas. He was taken prisoner and confined for a time in Libby prison, but rejoined his regiment when he was exchanged. He was mustered out with the rank of orderly sergeant in 1864.He moved to a farm in Ovid Township in December, 1865. He has served his township as highway commissioner, treasurer, and after 1885, as supervisor. Mr. Sherman was post commander of the G. A. R. in Ovid, and vice president of the Michigan Association of ex-prisoners of war.
