Biographical Sketch:
Son of Elijah T. and Caroline (Fisher) Smith. Moved to Michigan around 1854. He served in the 1st and the 4th Michigan Infantry. He was discharged to accept a promotion as Captain in Company I of the 123rd U.S. Colored Infantry on January 20, 1865, and mustered out of service on October 16, 1865. He was supervisor of Locke Township, Ingham County, 3 terms, and as supervisor at large of the city of Owosso 3 times.

Notable Facts:
Exact date of birth not known. He was reported as missing in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 2, 1863, but was actually captured and taken prisoner. He was released from the Belle Isle Prisoner of War Camp on August 11, 1863, and returned to the regiment on September 4, 1863. Woounded in action in 1864 at Wilderness, VA
