Lake Superior region explorer for the Montreal Mining Co. in 1846; admitted to the bar in 1854; city attorney of Detroit 1857-1860; attorney of the police board of Detroit 1867-1879; elected judge of the superior ct. of Detroit 5/1/1879 thru 1887, resigned when elected to Congress.

1st elected as a Democrat to the 50th Congress; served from 3/4/1887- 8/17/1893. Died in office.
