Biographical Sketch:
Son of Solomon & Julia (Granger) Withey. Of Scottish, Dutch & English descent. The family name was once McWithey. Enrouted to Gr. Rapids, MI, he took a job clerking in Canada & later, Ann Arbor. Returned to Cuyahoga Falls, OH, 1837 to study; called to help with the family business, 1838; began studying law, 1839; admitted to the bar 1843. Practiced in Gr. Rapids 19 yrs. Judge of probate, 1848-52. Dir. & pres., 1st Nat'l Bank of Gr. Rapids. Organized the court system for Western Michigan.
