Of Scottish ancestry. Son of William and Ruth (McAllen) Ballentine. Came to Mich. in 1850; spent 3 years on a farm; entered dry goods business as clerk in Port Huron; formed dry goods firm of S. L. & D. Ballentine with brother, 1867. member of the board of education for nearly 25 years; was also one of the founders of the Commercial Bank, and a promoter of the narrow gauge railroad into the Thumb of Michigan. He was interested in the Port Huron City Electric Railway and other commercial interests in city and county
