At the early age of 13 he was compelled to earn his living and began as train boy on what became known as the Big Four Railroad, between Cleveland and Columbus. While thus engaged he studied telegraphy, which business he followed 30 years. Around 1887, he bought a farm near Petersburg, Monroe Co., MI.
