Biographical Sketch:
Son of Jacob and Mabel (Drake) Kanouse. He enlisted in Company D , Sixth Michigan Cavalry, 9/4/1862. In June , 1865 , he was sent to Wyoming to fight the Indians , being mustered out of service in the following November at Fort Leavenworth , Kansas . He returned to Michigan to farm. He served as supervisor, township treasurer and highway commissioner.

Notable Facts:
He was wounded 3 times. Left arm amputated. He was promoted to a first sergeant in September, 1863, and was made first lieutenant in 1864. He belonged to General George A. Custer's Michigan Cavalry Brigade and was present at the surrender of General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox, VA, and was also on the grand review in Washington, DC, in May, 1865. Death certificate says he was to be buried in Bancroft, MI; Find-a-Grave says Conway Twp, Civil War Soldier ... says Fowlerville. [Fowlerville is in Conway Twp]
