Biographical Sketch:
Son of James E. and Loretta B. Field, who died before his first birthday. Adopted by Rice A., an uncle, and Phoebe (Beers) Beal of Ann Arbor. During his college years he was managing editor of The Chronicle. Editor and proprietor of Ann Arbor Courier, was manager of the Port Huron Gas Company 10 years, and Director of the Ann Arbor Electric Light Company and President of the Street Railway connecting Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Member of the Public Domain Commission from 1908-1921. He served as a member of the Ann Arbor school board for 20 years, and was president of the Michigan Press Association in 1893. Member of the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan, 1908-1939. Member, Scottish Rite Masons; Sons of the American Revolution; Freemasons; Knights Templar; Shriners; Rotary; Beta Theta Pi; Phi Beta Kappa.
