Biographical Sketch:
Son of John and Orrit (Johnson) Wheaton. He came to Michigan around 1855. At the age of 16, he entered the wholesale house of Charles H. Northam & Co., of Hartford. In the succeeding 4 years he rose,
through all the grades, to book-keeper and confidential clerk; acquired a complete and accurate business education, aid the entire respect of his employers. In 1853, he moved to Detroit and entered the employ of Moore,
Foote & Co., large wholesale grocers. In 1855, he became the junior partner of Farrand & Wheaton, in the same line of business. On the dissolution of that
firm, he became the head of the firm of Wheaton, Leonard & Burr, and afterwards of that of William W. Wheaton & Co. He was elected Mayor in 1867. He held the office 4 years [1868-71]. He had the management of large mining and manufacturing interests in the iron district of Michigan.
