Biographical Sketch:
Son of Isaac Newton and Sarah A. (Houk) Johnson. His father died when he was 10 years old and his mother, when he was 16. Finding himself without a home, he went to live with a neighboring family, doing chores for his board and schooling. He engaged in the mercantile business for 6 years after which he was employed in the county treasurer's office for 6 years also was postmaster for 12 years.
