Moved to Michigan in 1839; settled in Brighton, Livingston County and worked as a merchant until he could complete his legal education; admitted to the bar in 1842. Served as Secretary of State of Michigan in 1848 & 1849. Editor & proprietor of the Lansing Journal; State printer 1852-1855. Mayor of Lansing in 1867; moved to East Saginaw, MI, and engaged in the practice of law 1864-1873; moved to St. Louis, MO, in 1873, to Hot Springs, Ark., in 1880, and to Bismarck, MO, in 1882. Member of the Masons
