Biographical Sketch:
Of German ancestry. Son of Ludwig E. "Louis" Zagelmeyer, born 1/31/1825, and Paulina Grahlow, who immigrated to the US from Germany in 1850 and moved to Saginaw from New York City in 1852. The family moved to Bay City when Alexander was a boy. He worked with his father in a family lime business, started Marine Ice Company with brother Frank, which became Bay County Ice Company. Also started a coal mining company and a brick manufacturing company. He was head of the Zagelmeyer Cast Stone Block Co. Served in as county treasurer and on the Board of Trade of Bay City. He was a member of the Knight Templars, Masons, Moslem Temple of the Mystic Shrine of Detroit, Salzburg Arbeiter Society, Knights of Pythias, Elks, Arion Society, Royal Arcanum and Order of Odd Fellows.

Notable Facts:
First coal operator in Bay; first coal prospector in Bay County.
