Son of James and Katherine Gordon. Professor in Geneva, NY; studied law. Moved to Marshall, MI, 1835. Accidentally fell to his death from a second-story balcony, in Brazil, 12/1853 (Rep.Dist says he died in S. America in 1849).

2nd Lt Gov. of Michigan, 1840-41; Gov. of Michigan, 1841-42; candidate for U.S. Rep. from Michigan 2nd Dist., 1846, 1847; U.S. Consul in Pernambuco, Brazil, 1850-53. Stewards of the State says he died Dec. 1853, [exact date not given] and that his burial place is unknown.
