Son of Runa? and Mary Ann (Ward) Morton. In 1837, his parents moved first to Lenawee County, then to Clinton County and then to Ingham county, to farm. In 1862, he enlisted in the 6th Michigan Cavalry, and served to the close of the war. He was elected county coroner1 term and supervisor 4 terms.
